Postpartum Depression (PND)


What is Postpartum Depression?
- commonly referred to as “postnatal blues” or “baby blues
- defined as part of the psychological disturbance & usually occurs a few days after delivery
- lasts 2 to 3 days
- PND is characterized by mood swings, tearfulness, lack of confidence, self-reproach, poor sleep, changes in appetite and loss of libido

- depression can follow PND
- mother suffering from PND may feel depressed, irritable, worthless, helpless, tired and lacking in drive
- the mother may even perceive her infant as being difficult baby & is unable to cope with the demands of a newborn

How can Postpartum Depression be managed?


   1. Studies had shown that prenatal classes which teach expectant mothers hormonal, social and psychological aspects of having a baby cope better post-delivery
   2. Practical assistance (such as helping with household chores and caring for older children) and emotional support from spouses & family members is crucial in helping a new mother cope with a newborn
   3. Health professionals and support groups can provide mothers with a listening ear & moral support
   4. Medication treatment is used in conjunction with other therapies for women who have more severe or longstanding depression

- affects about 20% of postnatal women
- the cause in multi- factorial & can be due to social, cultural or biological factors
- important to recognize and acknowledge the problem to render psychological & physical support, counseling and possibly even medication
