How to know if a parent looking for a tutor is likely to be difficult to deal with/ terminate a tuition assignment after a few months/sessions

he/she will
- ask for a phone interview before considering to take the tuition assignment with the tuition agency
- make known/clear his/her expectations of the tutor is to keep the child occupied during the tuition sessions & the child has tuition/enrichment almost everyday
- delay/postpone the commencement of the first session after confirmation of the assignment
- refuse to pay for fees and offer to pay only for the transport when the tutee is not at home upon arrival & waiting outside the door
- cancel sessions saying child is sick/has alot of school homework
- chat with you before &/or after the first session of tuition

- SMS &/or call you after a few sessions to discuss about the progress and/or how to make the lessons more effective/suitable for the tutee
- SMS on a weekend and if you do so in future, will request to have a chat with you after a lesson to tell you not to SMS him/her on a Sunday as it is Family Day

- request for reminder for payment of fees
- repeated delay in the payment of fees
- expect the tutor to check the tutee's class website for Homework/Tests & updates
- question you if you end the session a few minutes earlier than the stated timing &/or the tutee will ask you when did you arrive/the session started/session will end

How to boil fresh eggs that make peeling the EASIEST

6 Simple Steps to boil fresh eggs that make peeling the EASIEST

1. Bring a pot of water to boil.
2. Lower eggs into water.
3. Boil for about 13 minutes.
4. Take out of water.
5. Rinse under cold water or place the eggs in a basin of cold water.
6. Replace with more cold water when water becomes warm.

Ta-da! The eggs will peel easily!

P/S: Use fresh, room temperature eggs that are not refrigerated. Take eggs from the refrigerator 60 minutes before cooking.

Wednesday, October 31, 2012

How long can eggs stay fresh? How to tell that the eggs are still fresh?

Refrigerated you have 3 months from lay to eat them, easily.

The FLOAT Test
Eggs are good when:

Fill a bowl with water.
Place the eggs in a bowl so that all the eggs are submerged.

If the eggs settle to the bottom and lay on their side...they are as fresh as can be and yolks do not need to be thoroughly cooked.

If the eggs, while still on the bottom of the bowl, start pivoting upward they are a little less fresh but can still be used for baking, scrambling..

When completely upright but still on the bottom of the bowl...the egg is still ok but must be thoroughly cooked (scrambling, used in batter for frying..)

Once the egg starts to float and is no longer in contact with the bottom of the bowl...discard it!

When things spoil, they oxidize; this may explain why the egg floats;)

How to handle situation when parents don't pay for tuition (Part 2)

When the tuition agent doesn't respond to your calls and SMSes, and the ultimatum is sent via SMS indicating that should the agent is still uncontactable, legal assistance will be sought.
The agent responded finally to the SMS.

Even though the agent did not help to fight for the payment of 45min fee, pushing all the blame to the tutor, finding fault etc, and siding the client, there's nothing the tutor can do as the legal fees involved is much more than the tuition fees if tutor decides to pursue at the Small Claims Court.

The tuition agent is Ms. K from T**tutors 9***7089.

The assignment is for P5 Chinese at Blk 177 Bishan St 13 and the client is Ch***tine G**.

How to handle situation when parents don't pay for tuition

Tuition assignments assigned by tuition agent if not carried out for any reason given by parents, the tutor will not be paid.
The parents may offer to reimburse the transport and not pay for the tuition as scheduled.
At most, the parent may agree to pay for 50% of the tuition fee. ie. pay for 45min instead of 90min session.

Tutors will have to agree to the arrangement or parent may get too angry if tutor request for tuition agent to intervene. At most, the tuition agent will propose you to charge 50% of the tuition. However, if the parent decided to terminate the tutor, he/she would not be paid at all, even the scheduled tuition which did not take place.

A tuition agent Ms. K from T**tutors 9***7089 is one such agent.

The assignment is for P5 Chinese at Blk 177 Bishan St 13 and the client is Ch***tine G**.

The student is a polite girl, but the same cannot be said for the parent and grandparents.
She offered the tutor a cup of water after rinsing the cup but was chided by the grandmother saying she'd make the cup even dirtier by washing, and hurry the granddaughter to quickly return to the room for tuition as time is precious.
The tutor later praised the girl for having good habits to rinse the cups before serving drinks to guests.

It was later learnt that the student had 4 other tutors previously, and 3 of them share the same surname as the 5th tutor.
How is it possible to have 4 tutors in by P5 1st quarter?
That is quite unbelievable.

Who knows, any subsequent tutor who is brave enough to take up the assignment may have to be prepared to handle the parent and not the student.

85th week of motherhood

16apr - 22apr'12

- When there's no reply from the tuition agent after last Mon, I went down this time, for the lesson 1 at 117 bishan st 13 and reached earlier than scheduled time
- the student and the maid stood at the door but instead of opening the gates for me, she told me that her mother had told her there's no tuition today
- I told her that I wasn't aware, and tried calling the tuition agent Ms. K, but to no avail
- I sent an SMS to Ms. K relating the situation hoping she'd get back to me soon
- I don't have the parents' contact no.
- the student went to call her mother but she's in a meeting at the moment and was uncontactable
- I went in to wait (sat down on the sofa without being asked)
- after 15min of waiting, the grandmother finally told the granddaughter not to wait anymore and to begin tuition
- towards the end of the tuition, I received 2 missed calls (I didn't answer as I was having tuition)
- Ms. K SMS at 543pm 'i already tell u parent wants to terminate u. cos of ur attitude. u wan her to pay full lesson for the first time u go.'
- this wasn't true as there's no such confirmation stating the above claimed.

- trying to reach Ms. K via SMS and phone since but to no avail
- on Wednesday I sent an ultimate SMS at 1208pm to her, saying that I may have to seek legal advice and assistance on the matter if she's uncontactable
- she replied SMS 3 hours later (after 1 week's of absence) at 305pm saying 'the parent did inform u after the first time u go. and ask u whether u wan her to compensate half lesson and still continue with lessons in future and u told her u wan to collect 1 full lesson's fee. and she refuse and even told u if u wan 1 full lesson's fee then nvm she will terminate u straight. y didn't u get back to her? u insisted her to pay 1 full lesson's fee right. i even ask u also u did not reply me on whether u wan 1 full lesson fee or half lesson's fee and straightaway proceed to the 2nd lesson when u already know that the parent is very angry already.'
- there wasn't any such thing as the parent mentioned in the phone call the week before, if i insist to charge full lesson (which I didn't) after 10 lessons i no need to come anymore. (not the same as in Ms. K SMS reply above)

- replied SMS at 419pm 'u did not reply with ok. i kept on sms u but din receive reply from u. and ur msges were always very slow. u did not even confirm properly before going for 2nd lesson.
- I asked her if she's remembered the wrong person as I'm always very prompt to reply SMSes, and quoted her the timings of my sent replies and post her a question asking why there's no confirmation to make the 45mins fee payment as promised should the parents wish to terminate the assignment the previous week and so on and she replied 'i did not remember the wrong E****.

- how can tutors protect their rights and be given justisfied treatment and payment for their professional services rendered to clients recommended by tuition agency?

84th week of motherhood

9apr - 15apr'12

- On Monday, there's a heavy downpour as I was walking to the nearest bus-stop to fetch TK
- hubby is buying dinner after work

- P5 student from new assignment stayed back in school without prior notice and so there's no tuition
- grandparents were also unaware of the tuition scheduled
- after standing at the door briefly, I suggested to the grandmother to call the mother to enquire and inform her
- parent offered to pay me for my transport
- I explained that since there's no cancellation of the tuition prior to the scheduled time, and upon arrival to the venue, it'll be best to consult the tuition agent on the best justified solution.
- I was told on the phone that if I insist on full payment today (which I didn't), after 10 lessons, there's no need for me to continue (hostility in the tone)
- after I repeated that parent to consult the tuition agent for professional advice, parent asked if what the agent said will be final
- the conversation ended when I repeated that the agency will have prior experience on such situtation to best handled the situation
- I somewhat briefly explained to the student's grandmother (no facial expression) what the parent told me over the phone before i left the place

- the tuition agent replied SMS at 604pm 'hi e**** can u jus charge 45mins fee for the 177 bishan st 13 assig? i noe its the parent's fault but she din do it on purpose. we won charge the 45mins fee.'

- after I asked if today was considered lesson 1, the agent Ms. K replied SMS at 726pm 'not considered 1st lesson. next lesson den count commission onwards ok?'
- I agreed to charge for 45mins and my reply at 806pm 'Ok. But what if parent terminate this assign after first 4 lessons? What's the minimum no of lessons the parent agreed with you? Thanks.'
- there's no further confirmation or reply from the tuition agent..

- it's an established online tuition agency (T**Tutors) in Singapore and only the mobile phone 9***7089 of the tuition agent's in-charge Ms. K is provided
- when the assign is confirmed, an email will be sent to the tutors with the details of the assign (usually the unit no. of the venue will be missing from the SMS assign sent earlier)

- in such cases, when a tutor turn up at a new assignment, and the tuition was cancelled for some reasons, will tutors get paid partially? Are there any rules/regulations to state the standard procedure to handle such case?

- in the email assignment confirmation sent by Ms. K on 5 April 12, it's stated that the tutors are still entitled to 50% of the total amount of tuition fee the tutor had attended, and in this case, tutor has been promised 45mins fee:

Name of Client: Ch***tine G** (the student Chl** K*w is studying in the nearby KC Pr***yter**n Pri school, she's had 4 tutors previously, and the last three share the same surname as me).

As per our terms and conditions, tutors who were found to be under performing (e.g. late for lessons, sleeping or having too many distractions during lesson, etc.) or requested to postpone/terminate any assignments before the end of 4 weeks of lessons, shall not be entitled to any tuition fees payable. However, if it is the client who requested to terminate the tuition, tutors are still entitled to 50% of the total amount of tuition fee of the number of lessons the tutor had attended. Tutors who terminate the assignment before first lesson will be liable to pay for the full commission. Despite the above conditions, we still encourage you to stay committed to this assignment, at least till the end of the tutee’s final examination in school.

Qingming Festival (清明节)

Yesterday was the traditional Chinese Qingming Festival 清明节 (Qīng míng jié), meaning Clear and Bright Festival. It is a day to mourn the departed people. Traditionally, the Chinese believed that the spirits of deceased ancestors will look after the family. Hence. Qingming Festival is the traditional day for people to visit the graveyard, so it is also called Tomb Sweeping day.
According to Wikipedia,
For the Chinese, it (Qingming) is a day to remember and honour one’s ancestors at grave sites. Young and old pray before the ancestors, sweep the tombs and offer food, tea, wine, chopsticks, (joss) paper accessories, and/or libation to the ancestors. The rites are very important to most Chinese and especially farmers. Some people carry willow branches with them on Qingming, or put willow branches on their gates and/or front doors. They think that willow branches help ward off the evil ghosts that wander on Qingming.

Is a vegetarian diet suitable for my babies?

Myth: Babies/young children taking vegetarian food will be lacking in certain nutrients.

Fact:
Vegetarian food for babies can be very nutritious. If you are bringing up your baby as a vegetarian, it means that you probably won't give him any meat, fish, seafood or animal by-products, such as gelatine. Most vegetarians, however, eat some animal products, such as milk, cheese (there're some made with vegetarian rennet) and eggs.

To help your baby enjoy his food and get the nutrients he needs, offer him a variety of foods from the four main food groups:
  • bread, rice, potatoes, pasta and other starchy foods (carbohydrates)
  • fruits and vegetables (green leafy vegetables are great source of iron)
  • milk and dairy foods (some vegetables such as 黄花、香菜、油菜、洋白菜 contain 463g, 170, 140 and 100 of calcium respectively for every 100g of vegetables and walnuts are a great source of calcium as well)
  • cooked-through eggs (including the egg yolk which is a great source of fats, Vitamin A and iron), beans and other non-dairy sources of protein, including soya, pulses, nuts and seeds
Some vegetarian food may have too much fibre and not enough energy (calories) for babies. So make sure your baby gets plenty of energy-rich foods, such as avocado and hummus.

It's also fine to give your baby white bread, pasta and rice as well as wholegrain versions. This is because too many high-fibre foods can stop him from absorbing important nutrients, such as calcium and iron.

Your baby will also need a source of milk. Oat, rice and soya milks (even if they are calcium-enriched) do not provide the same amount of energy, protein or essential nutrients that breastmilk and formula milk provide. Find out what some experts have to say about soya formula milk.

If you need advice on which milk is suitable for your baby, talk to your health visitor, practice nurse or a dietitian. They may suggest you continue to breastfeed or give your baby formula milk for longer than you were initially planning.

An old story of a sick King and The Happy Wood cutter

Once a King of rich kingdom fell sick, no doctors were able to cure him. The king was in severe pain and was not able to sleep at all. Finally the courtiers brought about a wise old doctor.

The wise old doctor listened to king, the king complained that he is not getting any sleep and and is always in pain. He also told Doctor that he would reward him very handsomely if he cures him.

The wise old doctor smiles and tells King and his courtiers that the cure was very simple, they just have to find a happy man and give his shirt to the king.

King sent his best messenger across the kingdom, first to meet him were Nobles. They said "we happy no way, king is ill, he can remove us any day he wants we always are stressed to remain in his good books".

Next messenger went to rich merchants, on asked if they were happy they said "Of Course not, how can we happy when King levies so much tax, business can fall any day.

And the list went on with servicemen, army and all.

Finally the messenger reached end of Kingdom and was sitting in forest and was about to give up, he heard a wood cutter whistling while working. He thought to give it a last try and asked him whether he is happy, The wood cutter replied "Of course, I have plenty to eat, there is enough wood in forest to sell in market and have decent living. "

Upon hearing this King's messenger said "quick man give me your shirt". The wood cutter replied "I have none".

Happiness and being rich or wealthy are two completely different things. This fact itself was first espoused by Buddha who was the prince of Kingdom and left his home to find enlightenment.

Why does my toddler get angry when he doesn't get his way?

Some advice from developmental psychologist on how to handle a child when he doesn't get his way which may lead to a 'hitting' problem
1. Try not to take it personally. Your toddler is undergoing some amazing changes right now and needs to be able to express his emotions. In the beginning, he wasn't aware of himself as a separate entity, a person with preferences and dislikes. Starting early in his second year, though, as his language skills and intellect developed, he began to discover his individuality, realizing that he was a "me" and an "I." That "me" wants his way, but hasn't yet learned self-control.

Imagine someone thwarting you when you tried to get something you really wanted — a raise at work or a much-needed vacation. You'd probably get mad, just like your toddler does. But as an adult, you're able — at least ideally — to put your disappointment into perspective. Your child can't. Right now, every goal is important to him, and he doesn't understand that he may get what he wants later — but not right now, when he wants it. The promise of a future payoff ("We can't get you a treat now, but after we finish grocery shopping we can go to the toy store") doesn't soothe an impatient toddler since he has only a vague concept of time and exists primarily in the present.

Your child's reactions are a sign that his emotions are maturing as they should be. The intensity and frequency of his anger may also be a function of his temperament. Has he always been quick to take offense, fussy for long periods of time, or difficult to console? Some children are more easily upset and more difficult to calm down. Consequently, they may at times seem truly inconsolable.

2. One thing you can do as a parent is to pick your battles and let her have his way when it makes sense, so that he gets what he wants some of the time. For example, if he demands to bring his stuffed bear and wear mismatched clothes to school, and there's a rule at school saying toys aren't allowed, you can let him choose what he wants to wear and say no to the bear. At least he can feel empowered because he got to make him own decision about what to wear that day.

3. Try distracting him so he doesn't dwell on his feelings and becomes occupied with another task instead. If he is upset that you won't let him eat chocolate for breakfast, for example, make him laugh by taking a swig of milk and showing off your milk mustache. You'll be surprised at how easily distracted toddlers are.

4. Finally, talk to your toddler about what he feels, and why he can't have what he wants. Explain the reasoning behind your refusal. For example, instead of simply saying "no" to her request for a second helping of pie, tell her, "We don't eat two desserts because that might give us a tummy ache."

What's most important is that you are able to set limits for your child without ruling with an iron fist. When your child is conscious of having reasonable boundaries (and knows that manipulation won't help his get away with anything) but also feels free to express his desires, he'll be able to learn one of life's basic lessons: You don't always get what you want.

TK went to 'The Moving Masterpiece' exhibition at 2 days to 17m

A Journey to view

A Moving Masterpiece 动感《清明上河图》

We left home in the morning to visit a Kindergarten at Eunos
before meeting Ma at Expo.
We bought take-away lunch at Vegan Burger
We prefer the pepper mayo to the tarta burger.

There were a long queue in the exhibition Hall, waiting to get their audio sets.
Many visitors stop at the entrance
to read the introduction on Song Dynasty,
including Ma and hubby.

I asked hubby to come and take a photo of the wall at the entrance.
Hubby commented that every time we take a photo,
many people will follow suit.

Quickly, I thought if 'chopping' the place before others crowd around
and called Ma (see if she'd like to come take a shoot).
She thought I'm hurrying her and said she's reading the poster..
before she could finish her sentence,
I heard ‘让她看完’。

Fine, I said to myself, and proceeded to join the long queue inside,
as the people were 'shooed' in,
and someone was telling us that there's a long queue inside.

Sure enough, it was long.
Finally, it was our turn to get the audio sets.
It was fairly easy to use
(there's a monitor at the queue by the wall to explain how to use the audio set).

TK was awake all the time, even though he's not napped in the morning
(most of the time he'd nap by noon, if not latest 2-3pm).
I put him to sit in the baby stroller even though he refused
so I can feed him the multigrain porridge I've prepared in the morning.
He seemed to be more interested in the audio set hanging from from my neck.

He was looking here and there,
sometimes pointing and saying words only he can understand.
I guess he's trying to tell us what he's seen and that he is feeling excited.

We started with the 5 Elements:
Fire, Wood, Earth, Water and Metal (火、木、土、水、金)
I stayed with TK till he was done with the porridge,
pushing him to each station, stopping for him to 'view'.

There were many exhibits at each of the 5 Elements.
The following are some of them:

Interesting facts and statistics in the Making of the the animated version of the Lengendary Chinese Masterpiece - Qing Ming Shang He Tu

Finally, we came to the highlights of the exhibition to view the ‘清明上河图’.
We didn't bother to view the different characters before entering
(as they all look similar).
Rather, we went into the viewing Hall which was quite dim
to be immersed by the spectacular magnified scroll
created by
Zhang Zeduan 张择端 , a native of Dongwu (Zhucheng, Shandong today) and
an imperial artist of the Northern Song Dynasty.
It captures the daily life of people from the Song period at the capital city of Bianjing (Kaifeng today),
in praise of the clean governance of Emperor Song Huizong's 'Qing Ming'
which means 'clean and bright'.

The original painting is now kept in the vaults of the Palace Museum in the Forbidden City, Beijing.

Strangely, we saw a queue before an exhibit of the ‘清明上河图’in a horizontal see-through case.
We wanted to join the queue, but hubby was more interested to see the 'moving masterpiece' instead.

We spent a long time there, walking, standing, watching the different parts of the projection
while listening to the audio explanation.

Luckily, there were some seats at the back for the tired feet to rest but still not enough.
I finally figured where the 16 different parts of the projected 'masterpiece' are (at each part there's a picture of the scroll on the audio set for you to locate before you press the 'play' button).

We saw a little boy jumping up and down on the little boat (picture on the right above is slowly moving towards the bridge from the right) under the ‘虹桥’
as the boat nearly hit the bridge (picture on the left above is the bridge).

We had a fruitful day, and our feet were tired,
and we rested briefly before hubby went for a final view from right to left.
There're some exhibits on the different parts of the scroll before the exit of the viewing Hall below:

TK went ‘Namo Namo’ with palms together at 5 days to 15 mths’ old

Since he heard the chanting
in the morning of his late Granduncle’s prayers,
he went ‘Namo Namo’ and chant along with a little bow and palms together.
That surprised us as we didn’t expect him
to pronounce a two-syllable word at 5 days to 15 months’ old.

Hence, we want to make sure
he gets the correct greeting
on the auspicious day as most people do not wish to be greeted as if in praying with palms together.
