Breastfeeding Benefits

-  the ideal choice for new mothers and has benefits for infants, mothers, families & society
- according to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), breast milk:

    * strengthens the baby’s immune system because it has antibodies that help protect infant from certain infections such as ear & respiratory infections.
    * lessens the occurrence of childhood illnesses such as diarrhoea.
    * provides an infant with the proper balance of nutrients required for growth & development.
    * is convenient since breast milk is always available and does not require preparation or storage.
    * helps both mother and infant can benefit psychologically through this close & warm interaction.


- a mother’s breast milk provides babies with a combination of nutrients that helps them grow & develop.
- breast milk is the most complete form of nutrition for infants.
- a mother's milk has just the right amount of fat, sugar, water and protein that is needed for a baby's growth & development.
- it boosts a baby’s immune system to help protect the baby against a variety of allergies and infections.
- the proteins and fats in breastmilk are easier to digest.

- AAP further states, "Gradual introduction of iron-enriched solid foods in the second half of the first year should complement the breast milk diet.
- it is recommended that breastfeeding continue for at least 12 mths, and thereafter for as long as mutually desired."
