- 3000-yr-old Egyptian document holds one of the earliest written records of a pregnancy test in which a woman who might be pregnant would plant wheat and barley seeds
- if the barley grew, it meant she was pregnant with a boy; if the wheat grew, she would bear a girl
- this theory tested in 1963 found the pregnancy aspect to be 70% accurate (but not the gender dertermination)
- in ancient China, barley was honoured as a symbol of male virility since the heads of barley are heavy and contain numerous seeds
